Pressurecat - This will likely be the last post I make on a thread you are involved in, depending on how you respond to this, as well as on whether or not you begin to treat the other folks on here with respect.

Here it is:

I was thinking about you yesterday while I was doing some gutter cleaning, and I have some friendly advice that may help you through the winter. I see that you have to have a “zero investment” start, and power washing is not conducive to that. Gutter cleaning, however, is! The initial materials for gutter cleaning are as follows:

  • 100’ of garden hose and a nozzle $75.00, or borrow hose, or use hose you already have

  • 5 gallon bucket
    $0-5

  • ladder(s)
    $75-100 on craigslist, or borrowed, or use ones you already have

  • Gutter Scoop (from WCR) A PRICELSS TOOL!!!
    $10

  • Heavy Duty Rubber Gloves
    $5 at Wal-Mart

  • PROFESSIONALLY MADE business cards (double sided printing with a list of your services on the back)
    $10-50

That’s it…That’s pretty much all you need to get started, and we’re about to get into the busy season for it. Also, this is a business where you CAN get work going door-to-door. Just select streets with homes in the 100-200k range and go up and tell them you’re wanting to expand your gutter cleaning route, (and have some business cards MADE that you can use to INTRODUCE yourself they’re really cheap) Price by the linear foot of gutter (search the forums here and at WCR for great pricing guidelines) and you should easily earn $75-100 per hour. Then you’ll get through the winter AND have some capitol so you can start your Power Washing business PROPERLY next season.

Before you reason away anything I listed above, please note:

If you can only afford or borrow one ladder that’s too small, then do that and only target one story homes with walkable roofs.

If there are “no $100-200k homes in your area” drive to another area. Don’t sit at home for 0 when you can drive 45 minutes for thousands.

One more thing: If you don’t have the money for any of the stuff listed, you may want to sell your pressure washer to raise the funds. You’ll never get through one season if power washing with the one you have, so it might be good to get rid of it (while it’s still operational) and use the money you get from it to buy the gutter cleaning equipment I listed above. It’s none of my business what you do, I recognize that, I’m just trying to help.

Good info Jesse. And if you want to make a bit more cash, get something that can take the black oxidation off of the outside of the gutters like Gutter Grenade from Pressure Tek. It’s $22 for a gallon and I’ve had lots of success with it.
