I have a customer wanting to stain a cedar deck but I’m not sure if it’s ok to use regular stain with this. These planks and rails are all custom cut from the trees from his lot. I’m used to the treated lumber from the store but have not experienced this before. So my question is my I use any semi stain or should I use something special for this. Thanks
Is this a new cedar deck? If so, I’d let the cedar weather for a year or two before cleaning and staining. Otherwise, I would assume most semi-transparent stains should work. We only use a true oil based stain, and often strip off old water based stains for customers.
It’s older and has a linseed oil on it now.
